Introduction:

As soldiers and sailors alike went through their last training exercises along the southern coast of England in preparation for - they were later to learn - a significant and real action, i.e., the Dieppe Raid, not "just another drill", many other war actions and events took place and were reported via various news outlets across the globe.

News reports filled newspapers across Canada and we are fortunate to be able to access detailed accounts, editorial opinions and cartoons, and general information that speaks to the times.

The following news clips were published in The Winnipeg Tribune and readers can peruse the newspaper at their leisure by visiting the rare archive presented by the University of Manitoba.

Headlines are presented almost daily pertaining to the Eastern Front:

Calls for a western front, in support of Russia, are made almost daily as well it seems:

The belief expressed in the next article - "some major diversion to relieve the Soviet Union in imminent" - may have had some foundation. One reason perhaps - Operation RUTTER had been cancelled on July 7 (or two and a half weeks earlier) but talk about its objective, to raid Dieppe and environs, may have leaked out.

Besides printing grocery ads (that's a good  price for spuds!), editorial cartoons reveal much is happening in North Africa. (Allied invasion took place a few months later, i.e., November 8, 1942).

This is not the first time I have read the name of Lt. E. H. Bartlett, RCNVR, attached to detailed reports about the adventures of those in the Volunteer Reserve.

The incident referred to below, in very good detail, was likely the one mentioned in a small news clip posted in an earlier entry

The earlier news clip, to which the above refers, is posted here once again below:

Though one can locate many cartoons done by David Low, I have been unable to locate the one mentioned above.

Here is another valuable piece by Lt. E. H. Bartlett, headlined with one Englishman's ominous words (the Dieppe Raid is about 3 weeks away):

More news clippings, editorial cartoons and more will follow.
