Editor's Research: Invasion of Italy (13) - Montreal Star (Sept. 18-22, '43)

Where's Sholto? He's Delayed, in Augusta, Sicily.

Armadas, Airfields, Allied-Held Areas, Red Army and more

Please notice the short caption beneath the above Front Page. By more, I mean - at long last - an article by Montreal Star war correspondent Sholto Watt.

I had assumed, since Sholto was in The Med to report news pertaining to Canadian forces, he would submit twice-daily reports to keep all of Montreal up-to-date. But his reports have been few and far between, unless I have just consistently missed them.

I did not miss this one posted in the September 21st issue!
More details to follow

Before we read Mr. Watt's full article, here are a few details from the Sept. 18th and 20th issues:

The U.S. Flying Fortresses are having a big impact:

Both Fortresses and Mosquitoes are part of aerial offensives:

A 700-mile trek would leave us with a limp. One Canadian completed 700 miles with a limp!

I do like to read articles or see photographs and captions that include actual names and addresses. Surviving family members are still alive to this day and could see their loved-ones in various situations re World War II. War correspondents who listed names from 80-85 years ago did many modern citizens a great favour, in my opinion:

Naples, Italy's 3rd largest city, will be much in the news as Allied forces seek to liberate the city on their way to Rome:

The Amalfi Coast is not too far from Naples. Someone who knows their travel posters may be able to tell us how old this one is...

The Russians are moving west, the Allied Forces in Italy are moving north, and Allied air power concentrated in the British Isles is moving west to Berlin and other German centres. Hitler is surrounded:

The "RIGHT TIME" for the Second Front is drawing closer (but still is eight to nine months away). So much will happen in those months, enough to fill thousands of newspapers, books and newsreels:

Before the Second Front can happen, there must be continued Allied success on the Third Front:

Sholto Watt, The Montreal Star's war correspondent, writes about "the man who likes bombs". The story (delayed) comes from Augusta, Sicily, a city south of Catania (see map above).

I am hoping that Mr. Watt is next on his way to Reggio Calabria (on the toe of Italy's boot) so that he can meet with Canadians in Combined Ops, ride on their landing crafts, and take lots of pictures of the Navy boys and write down all their names for several informative articles. : )

More news from Italy and The Med to follow.

And another article by Sholto Watt has been found.

"From Italy?" one might ask.

Sorry, I forget.
